About Marie

Marie grew up on the east side of Detroit and began taking organ lessons at the age of 7. Upon entering junior high school she began studying double bass and continued through graduation from high school. She then joined the local Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Hochberg of Wayne State University.

She later relocated to NC and took a few years off from playing music to explore art. Her father, Ronald H. Stone, was a professional artist and provided coaching, skills, technique and encouragement. She has exhibited at local galleries and art shows, and continues to sell drawings, paintings, collages, murals and functional art.

As an adult, she attended Guilford College and majored in music/classical guitar. In addition to her academic studies, she has also had the honor of performing in master classes for guitarists Andrew York, William Kanengiser, Elena Papendreau, Ricardo Cobo, Leo Welch, John Holmquist, among others. She performs locally as a soloist and in ensembles, and has been teaching guitar since 1997.

She is currently in the Musician and Leadership program with Music for People where she enjoys learning new instruments, improvising and leading groups in improvisation and music/sound exploration. Most of her spare time is spent composing, recording, painting and drawing, as well as assisting her partner, Stephen van Vuuren, with independent film projects. www.sv2studios.com
